The ancient ranges start an hour north. Wilpena Pound, Brachina Gorge, Arkaroola — the most photographed landscape in South Australia.
Port Augusta Foreshore & Bridge
Walk the foreshore, fish off the wharf, or just take in the view across Spencer Gulf. The pedestrian bridge gives the best photo angle.
Homestead Park Pioneer Museum
Open-air museum with a relocated 1850s pine-log homestead, vintage farm equipment and pastoral history. Quick visit, big payoff.
Water Tower Lookout
360° views over Port Augusta, Spencer Gulf, and the Flinders Ranges in the distance. Best at sunrise or sunset. Free to climb.
Worth the drive from Port Augusta
Wilpena Pound — 2 hr
The crown jewel of the Flinders Ranges. Bushwalks, scenic flights, Aboriginal cultural tours. A full day's adventure.
Whyalla — 50 min
Steel city with surprisingly clear water. Whyalla Maritime Museum, cuttlefish diving (winter), and the foreshore boardwalk.
Quorn & Pichi Richi Railway — 50 min
Historic outback town. Ride a heritage steam train through the southern Flinders. Bookings essential on weekends.
Coober Pedy — 5 hr
Opal capital of the world. Underground homes, underground churches, underground hotels. Worth the long haul.
Mt Remarkable National Park — 1 hr
Bushwalking, native wildlife, gorges and ridges. The closest national park to Port Augusta. Great for a quick reset.
Streaky Bay (Eyre Peninsula) — 4 hr
Across the head of the gulf onto the Eyre Peninsula. White-sand beaches, oysters straight off the boat, sea lions.
